Is 22ct actually better than 18ct?
It is a question I hear regularly at our Green Street showroom, particularly from customers buying a first piece of gold jewellery in the UK. Someone may have grown up wearing 22ct gold at home, while their partner has always bought 18ct jewellery.
Both are genuine gold. The difference is how much pure gold they contain, how they behave when worn and what type of jewellery they suit best.
What does 22ct gold mean?

The remaining percentage consists of other metals added to give the gold enough strength to be made into jewellery.
That high gold content gives 22ct gold its distinctive, rich yellow colour. It is also one reason it remains so popular for traditional Indian, Pakistani and South Asian jewellery.

What does 18ct gold mean?

What is the difference between 22ct and 18ct gold?
The biggest difference is purity.

The important point is that higher purity and greater hardness are not the same thing.
22ct has more gold. 18ct has more alloy.
That distinction explains most of the practical differences between them.
Is 22ct gold better than 18ct gold?
There is no single answer.
If your priority is نقاء الذهب, 22ct is the obvious choice because it contains significantly more pure gold.
If your priority is hardness and resistance to everyday wear, 18ct may be more practical.
I usually tell customers to start with the jewellery itself rather than the carat number.
A necklace worn mainly at weddings has different requirements from a ring worn every day while working, driving and doing household jobs.
Which is better for everyday wear?
18ct gold is generally the harder of the two, so it can be a practical choice for jewellery that receives frequent knocks or friction.
Rings are a good example. They are constantly exposed to surfaces and can take more wear than a necklace that sits around the neck.
That does not mean 22ct gold should only be kept in a jewellery box.
Many people wear 22ct chains, bangles and earrings regularly. The key is choosing an appropriate design and taking reasonable care of the piece.
Why does 22ct gold have a deeper yellow colour?
Pure gold has a naturally rich yellow colour.
Because 22ct gold contains more pure gold than 18ct, its colour is generally deeper and warmer.
The exact appearance of 18ct yellow gold depends on the metals used in its alloy. White and rose gold obviously look different because different alloy combinations are used to achieve those colours.
If you grew up around traditional South Asian jewellery, you will probably recognise the deeper yellow of 22ct gold immediately.
Is 22ct gold more expensive than 18ct gold?
For the same weight, 22ct gold normally has a higher underlying metal value because it contains more pure gold.
But that does not mean every 22ct jewellery piece costs more than every 18ct piece.
Consider a simple 22ct gold bangle and a detailed 18ct diamond ring.
The ring may contain less pure gold but could still have a much higher retail price because of the diamonds, design and workmanship.
This is why comparing only the carat or price per gram does not tell the whole story.
What about making charges?
The gold itself is only part of what you are buying.
Making charges reflect the work involved in turning gold into a finished piece of jewellery. A simple machine-made design and a detailed piece requiring significant handwork will not necessarily have the same cost.
This is also why two pieces made from the same purity of gold can have very different prices.
Which is better for Indian and South Asian jewellery?
For traditional South Asian jewellery, 22ct gold remains a very popular choice.
Its high purity, deeper colour and long association with wedding and family jewellery make it particularly suitable for pieces such as:

Is 22ct gold better for investment?
If by investment you mean higher gold purity, then 22ct has an advantage over 18ct because a greater proportion of its weight is pure gold.
But buying jewellery is different from buying investment gold.
With jewellery, you are also paying for design, workmanship and other costs. These may not be recovered in the same way when the jewellery is sold later.
So if your main objective is simply to own gold as an investment, you should compare jewellery with other forms of gold ownership rather than assuming that the highest carat jewellery is automatically the best investment.
What should you check before buying?
